Introduction

"Make everything as simple as possible but not simpler."
Albert Einstein (1879-1955)

Supportive supervision and data auditing is part of the middle ring of the 12 components of a functional HIV M&E system which deals with the collection, capturing and verification of data needed for the HIV M&E system. Supervising the organisations that deliver services, and auditing the data that they submit, are mechanisms to verify routine data that have been collected and captured.

NOTE: M&E supervision (and data auditing) differs from implementation supervision. The former refers to verification of the quality and completeness of routine monitoring data, whereas the latter refers to supervision of the actual implementation and quality of services. It is possible to combine these two types of visits, but their purpose should not be confused. Only M&E supervision and data auditing are addressed in this component.
